Let’s face it—businesses encounter major challenges that are quite inevitable, and most often, arise in unexpected circumstances. In 2022 alone, we’ve seen employees leaving their jobs in record numbers, and it doesn’t end there.

While some resignations are evident and openly communicated, there exists a subtler, more concerning phenomenon known as quiet quitting, which is affecting businesses of all sizes. This happens when employees disengage from their roles and eventually leave a company without making their intentions explicit.

In a study conducted by Gallup, 59% of employee respondents answered they are silently disengaged in their workplace that they end up reducing their effort, become less proactive, and eventually withdraw altogether, often without giving any indication of their intentions to leave.

  • A quiet quitter may display a noticeable decline in enthusiasm for their work. They may seem disinterested in tasks or projects that they previously found engaging.
  • They start withdrawing from social interactions with colleagues, becoming less involved in team activities or discussions.
  • They miss deadlines or produce work of lower quality than their previous performance.
  • They seem more preoccupied with personal matters during work hours, such as browsing job search websites or engaging in personal phone calls.
  • They avoid committing to long-term projects or future initiatives.

 

Strategies to Resolve Quiet Quitting

Tip #1: Understand that it’s human nature. While quiet quitting sounds like a scary thing, it is important to understand that it’s a natural response when employees feel that they are undervalued, unsupported, or already hitting a glass ceiling.

Tip #2: Build rapport and relationship.
When you prioritize employee well-being and actively engage your workforce, it leads to numerous benefits for both the employees and the organization as a whole.

Make sure to conduct one-on-one check-ins and open communication with your Team. Creating a supportive work environment where employees feel valued and heard can also prevent quiet quitting and foster employee engagement and loyalty.

Tip #3: Invest in their growth.
Employees often seek growth and advancement opportunities within their organization. Offer training programs, workshops, and mentorship opportunities to support their professional development. Investing in your employees’ growth shows that you value their potential and encourages them to stay committed to their roles.
